  • Veteran Females United will host its fifth annual fundraiser luncheon titled A Salute to Military Mothers to honor military mothers and those who support service at the Rio Events Center on May 4 from 2 to 6 p.m. Tickets cost $40 and may be donated back to veterans and their families.  ValleyCentral

CRIME NEWS

  • Brownsville PD is seeking multiple suspects seen on video assaulting a person on Springmart Boulevard — the video shows several men hitting, kicking and stomping the victim — after the incident was reported months later.  ValleyCentral

CULTURE NEWS

  • April 30th, 1975 marked the end of the Vietnam War, which resulted in heavy losses including 146 soldiers from the Rio Grande Valley. Local memorials in McAllen & Mission honor Veterans and remind our community of the lasting impact of the conflict.  ValleyCentral

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A Monday lockdown at Palmview High School was triggered when a student pulled a large object from their pocket, and La Joya district officials later confirmed the object was a wallet — ending the lockdown about an hour after it began.  KURV
  • IDEA San Benito Robotics Team will compete in the VEX V5 Robotics World Championship at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas from May 6 to May 8 as an eight-person team— they qualified in regional competitions and will face 800 high school teams from around the world.  ValleyCentral

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Weather Service predicts that Deep South Texas and the Valley will see hotter-than-normal weather from May through July—risk increasing later in May as a heat dome builds—and rain chances remain uncertain with heavy storms possible this weekend that may affect local water supplies.  MyRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Texas College economics professor Lyudmyla V. Dickinson recommended that the Valley set up a regional council to manage AI data and build data centers—she spoke at a forum hosted by the Rio Grande Guardian and STC. Former McAllen Mayor Jim Darling said cities must see clear rewards to join, and panelists noted that AI could improve efficiency and boost sales tax revenue—local leaders are now weighing the benefits.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • Elon Musk’s plan to turn the SpaceX site into a city called Starbase will be decided by a vote this Saturday; nearly 200 of 283 eligible voters have already cast early ballots. Local groups and officials worry the new city may give the company too much power over beach closures—this concern has spurred plans for protests on Saturday.  KURV
