ECONOMY NEWS

  • Airports in the Rio Grande Valley are facing revenue declines as migrant travel dropped following the cancellation of the CBP One program — officials report that fewer travelers are using the airport facilities. Valley International recorded a $500,000 shortfall — its outbound passenger numbers fell from 133,369 to 120,596 while Brownsville-South Padre Island International saw a 6% drop.  MyRGV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • American Rivers ranked the Lower Rio Grande between Del Rio and Brownsville as one of the most endangered rivers in America due to drought, heat, and unsustainable water use. The report calls for US+Mexico and local stakeholders to work together to improve the river’s flow.  KURV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents in Starbase will vote on May 3 to incorporate their community into a new city and elect a mayor plus two commissioners—if the vote passes, the new government will have the power to manage local services and work with SpaceX projects. City leaders will plan to meet state requirements for elections and public meetings as they guide the area’s growth.  MyRGV
  • A portion of State Hwy 4 will experience delays on April 26 due to SpaceX's approved transportation operations from the factory to Massey's. The transport will take about 2 hours—causing brief traffic delays—while the highway and beach remain open.  Cameron County
  • The City of Brownsville’s Department of Engineering and Public Works announced that East 12th Street will be closed temporarily on April 29; drivers should plan to use an alternate route.  City of Brownsville
  • Governor Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 14 on Wednesday to create the Texas Regulatory Efficiency Office, which will reduce red tape and streamline state operations for businesses. He was joined by House Speaker Dustin Burrows and Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick during the ceremony.  KURV

HEALTH NEWS

  • UTRGV researchers led by Dr. Cecilia Montiel-Nava are studying how bilingualism impacts language skills in autistic children in the Valley. They plan to enroll 150 children ages 9—11 and offer eligible families up to $120 in gift cards as part of the NIH-funded study.  KRGV
  • On April 10, DHR Health’s Level I Trauma Center teamed with Brownsville ISD and community partners to present the Shattered Dreams program at Rivera Early College High School as part of Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The event featured a realistic reenactment of a drunk driving crash with theater arts students and first responders, and officials reminded students to make safe driving choices as prom and graduation season approach.  Rio Grande Guardian
