  • Luis Fernando Gonzalez Altamirano, 39, was arraigned on a criminal negligent homicide charge after texting while driving led his semi-trailer to collide with a Chevrolet Aveo at noon on Saturday on FM 1421 and Road 233—killing 70-year-old Lorenzo Guajardo.  ValleyCentral
  • Jesse Leatherwood was sentenced on Monday to 35 years in prison after a Cameron County jury found him guilty of intoxication manslaughter for the crash that killed Deputy Constable Ruben Garcia in Brownsville—he apologized to Garcia’s family during sentencing.  KRGV
  • Testimonies continue in the 445th district court for the sentencing of Jesse Edward Leatherwood—a 47-year-old McAllen resident accused of crashing into a deputy constable's patrol unit near Marine Way Road on Sept. 30 that killed the officer—while state officials answered his legal team's objection to the jury penalty instructions.  ValleyCentral

  • Pope Francis died early Monday morning just after Easter Sunday—after battling double pneumonia—and local Catholic leaders in the Rio Grande Valley offered prayers for his eternal rest.  ValleyCentral
  • Residents mourn Pope Francis as his portrait stands near the altar at the Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle where prayers continue after he died Monday at age 88 — his hospital stay had lasted over one month due to a respiratory issue —. The Catholic Diocese of Brownsville announced two masses in his honor — one today at noon at Immaculate Conception and one on April 23 at 5:30 p.m. at the Basilica — with both services livestreamed on KRGV’s Facebook page.  KRGV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Rainfall on Monday caused power outages across the Rio Grande Valley. In Cameron County, AEP reported 2 outages and Magic Valley Electric reported 58 outages—fewer than 5 were reported in Hidalgo County—and officials will update the numbers throughout the day.  ValleyCentral

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr. thanked Governor Greg Abbott & Senator John Cornyn for requesting federal aid to help residents recover from the late March floods that damaged homes and disrupted lives. The aid was planned to cover expenses for temporary housing, emergency repairs, and disaster-related costs.  Cameron County
  • SpaceX will conduct TXDOT-approved transport operations on Highway 4 from 1 a.m. to 2 a.m. on April 23 (lasting about 15 minutes) that may briefly delay traffic although the beach and highway remain open.  Cameron County
  • Maria Elena Giner resigned as commissioner of the U.S. section of the International Boundary and Water Commission on Monday after four years and congratulated her replacement, Chad McIntosh, in her resignation letter. Her departure comes as the commission works to secure water deliveries from Mexico for Texas users—Giner had improved water flows and repaired key structures at the Amistad Dam—while challenges remain.  KRGV
