  • Mario Reyna, executive director of RioPlex, presented slides at the Texas Port to the Stars FDI Summit in Houston on April 9 and 10 to show how the group plans to grow like Coca Cola. He explained that RioPlex, located at the heart of North America, will boost regional growth and attract foreign investors—helping our area get noticed.  Rio Grande Guardian

CRIME NEWS

  • The state rested after three days of testimony in the intoxication manslaughter trial of Jesse Leatherwood — accused of causing the fatal crash that killed Cameron County Deputy Constable Ruben Garcia last September and whose blood tests showed high levels of Xanax, cocaine, and opioids — with defense set to present its case today.  KRGV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The 4th annual Rally in the Valley 4.0 gave Brownsville students a day of inspiration and opportunity—where they learned about different career paths. The event was hosted by the Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation in partnership with the City, Texas Workforce Commission, and Workforce Solutions Cameron—groups that worked to boost student futures.  City of Brownsville

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents in Escobares said recent floods damaged drainage and blocked the only road into their neighborhood, making it hard for people to get in or out. City officials said they will seek grants and meet with USDA and Congressman Henry Cuellar's office to fix and expand the drainage system—an effort long overdue.  KRGV
  • Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño Jr. said in a letter on April 4 that he opposes House Bill 4660 which would remove the county’s authority over closing Boca Chica Beach and S.H. 4 during SpaceX operations. He said the current system works well and noted that if Starbase becomes a municipality after the May 3 vote, only local residents will decide on future closures — a move he supports to maintain successful collaboration with SpaceX.  MyRGV
