  • SpaceX completed a static fire test of its new Starship V3 engine on Tuesday at Boca Chica's Starbase and will launch Flight 12 with an upgraded booster early to mid-May. The test is a step in its work with NASA for the Artemis program.  MyRGV
  • Nearly 300 small business owners are scrambling after Painted Tree Boutiques closed abruptly at the North Side marketplace, leaving vendors uncertain about the status of their companies & potential earnings as they seek answers.  KSAT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Triple-A reported that gas prices remain elevated at about 3-77 per gallon—a 40‑cent rise from the previous month and over a dollar higher than last year. Diesel prices have also increased, reaching a four‑year high in parts of the state.  KURV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two all girl teams from Brownsville ISD will return to the Greenpower USA national finals at Talladega Superspeedway near Birmingham from May 14-17 after last year's surprise third-place finish; they are preparing at Oliveira, where the program began (BISD approved travel funding).  MyRGV
  • Los Fresnos school district announced yesterday that Superintendent Gonzalo Salazar, who has led the district since 2005, will retire at the end of the school year. The board will begin searching for his replacement soon.  KURV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dr. Ezequiel Véliz, a Venezuelan-born physician at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco, is set to be released on bond after his detention at the Sarita checkpoint on April 6 after losing his TPS status, according to his attorney.  KRGV
  • Taxi fares in Brownsville will increase after city commissioners approved on April 7 an update that raises the base fare from $3.50 to $6; officials say the ordinance aims to improve passenger safety and clarify rules for taxis compared with rideshare companies (Uber and Lyft).  KRGV

  • UTRGV is expanding seating at Robert and Janet Vackar Stadium by adding 1,500 seats to the south end zone—raising total capacity from 12,000 to 13,498—ahead of the upcoming 2026 football season.
