- ➤ A 20-year-old man from Palmhurst admitted to killing a stray cat by curb stomping in the parking lot near Tru-Fit at 1718 E. Griffin Parkway on April 9 — he was booked on animal cruelty charges on Thursday, April 10 and released on a $100,000 bond after witness reports and a video of the incident emerged. KRGV
- ➤ U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized over $14 million in alleged meth hidden in 300 packages weighing 1,635.56 pounds from a trailer marked as fresh bell peppers and cucumbers — a shipment inspected at Pharr International Bridge on April 11 — as Homeland Security Investigations launched a criminal investigation. - ➤ A Pharr man and his 4-year-old son died in a Monday morning crash on US 281 near Edinburg when a suspected intoxicated driver in a white Chevrolet Malibu drove the wrong way—beer cans were later found in the vehicle. KRGV
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller announced $280 million in emergency aid for South Texas farmers who face water shortages due to Mexico’s missed treaty obligations. Eligible farmers can apply by May 22 + the funds will help cover crop losses and rising operating costs. FOX RGV

- ➤ Students at UTRGV won their fourth national chess championship by being named co-champions at the President’s Cup earlier this month (their past wins came in 2018, 2019, and 2021) and will be honored at halftime of the UTRGV spring football game this Thursday (April 17th). KURV

- ➤ The Texas Senate approved Senate Bill 36 by a vote of 26—4 to create a homeland security division in the Department of Public Safety. The new division will focus on immigration enforcement, organized crime, and protecting state infrastructure if the state House enacts the bill. KURV
