COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Alliance Action Sports Experts from Austria are nearly finished building a 492-foot pump track at Pedro Pete Benavides Community Park east of Brownsville using $424,000 in federal funds—this is the firm’s first U.S. project and only the second pump track in the Rio Grande Valley that will include solar-powered lights for night riding.  MyRGV

CRIME NEWS

  • Three men were arrested in Brownsville on March 11 after displaying weapons in an H‑E‑B parking lot—police said one suspect fled, prompting a chase to Harlingen where authorities recovered the weapons and charged the suspects with multiple offenses.  ValleyCentral

EDUCATION NEWS

  • More than 240 students from local districts attended Texas Southmost College Signing Day at the ITEC Center in Brownsville on April 10—where they signed letters of intent for programs in technical and healthcare fields. The event offered up to $500 in scholarships and featured representatives from employers—such as NextDecade, Bechtel and Coca Cola—ready to hire now or soon.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • School districts in the Valley are facing serious funding challenges as Brownsville ISD closed three schools due to a $16 million budget deficit and La Joya ISD reported a $4.2 million deficit for this year with a $10 million shortfall expected next year—teachers from Los Fresnos CISD and Lyford ISD met with state lawmakers to push for a higher basic allotment and better teacher pay.   • Nine international students at UTRGV had their visas revoked and were ordered to leave the United States; students are shocked and worry that more visas could be revoked soon—federal authorities have begun screening international students’ social media for pro-Palestine protests—.   • Jonah Garcia, an Eagle Scout from Brownsville, donated a giant chess board to Sharp Elementary School as his final project and played the first game with the students—using his skills to give back to his old school.  ValleyCentral

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Photos showed that heavy rain dropped 16 to over 20 inches in 24 hours—flooding homes and roads in rural areas like Green Valley Farms and Las Milpas. Many residents lost access to their homes as water filled streets and local helpers, including a pastor from Los Fresnos Church of Christ, assisted those affected—ongoing cleanup efforts continue.  MyRGV

HEALTH NEWS

  • A budget resolution passed Thursday raised concerns that proposed federal cuts to Medicaid will put cancer patients’ access to life-saving treatments at risk in the Valley. Cancer survivor Elvia M. Gibbs and health advocates warned that the cuts could leave thousands—including children and seniors—without needed insurance.  MyRGV
