ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Brownsville family is asking for donations after a fast-moving fire began in a neighbor's backyard and quickly destroyed their home, vehicles, and belongings while Lazaro Campos said his daughter Maria and his seven-year-old grandson escaped safely and a neighbor suffered minor burns as firefighters battled the flames for nearly three hours.  FOX RGV

CRIME NEWS

  • Brownsville police are seeking help to identify two women accused of stealing a cart full of merchandise from H-E-B on Southmost Boulevard as the suspects were seen loading the stolen items into a white Dodge Ram.  FOX RGV
  • Brownsville police investigated a bomb threat at the Friendship of Women shelter on East Price Road using a K-9 unit and EOD team—no explosives were found and no arrests were made as the facility quickly resumed its services.  FOX RGV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Brownsville Mayor John Cowen, Jr. thanked the Communications and Media Department for producing a video that shows the city’s growth is driven by rising employment, increased wages, major investments by SpaceX and NextDecade, and an upgraded credit rating — evidence that Brownsville is a powerhouse in the region. He said the milestones featured in the video are expected to further boost the local economy.  Rio Grande Guardian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brownsville ISD held its annual Food and Nutrition Services Food Show on Tuesday, April 8 where students sampled meals made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Shakera Raygoza of Terra Preta Farms and BISD officials served dishes like chicken pozole—showing the district's move toward cooking from scratch using a grant from the Chef Ann Foundation.  MyRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The House approved a Senate bill on Tuesday to set up the Texas Regulatory Efficiency Office, a DOGE style agency — one that will cut needless and costly rules — and the Senate passed the measure last month so it will soon go to Governor Abbott for his signature.  KURV
  • TxDOT announced that FM510 will close to through traffic—from FM803 to FM1575—beginning Tuesday, April 22nd for about four months due to roadway reconstruction. Drivers will be rerouted along a detour using FM803, FM2893 and FM1575 until mid-August.  ValleyCentral
