ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Two homes were destroyed in a fire near the intersection of Southmost Road & Tulipan Street in Brownsville on Monday at 3:30 p.m., with a man from one home sustaining burns while 20 firefighters worked three hours to contain the blaze and victims received aid from the American Red Cross.  KRGV

CRIME NEWS

  • On Sunday, two individuals — Angel Arturo-Hernandez and Ashile Yaleczi Alejandro — were taken into custody at Anzalduas Port of Entry after agents found a spider monkey in a zippered pink bag during a secondary inspection and admitted they planned to illegally import the animal without a permit.  MyRGV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Rio Grande Valley shrimpers say tariffs on imported shrimp will help them compete against cheaper farm-raised shrimp as they prepare for the Texas Gulf Shrimping season three months from now (families like the Cuevas have faced challenges in recent years). Some experts worry the measure could hurt the economy, but local groups view it as a lifeline.  KRGV

  • 7th grader Ruben Becerra had his award-winning writing recognized nationally when he won the 2025 Young Writers Creativity Award—his story will soon be published in the Young Writers Anthology. Originally from China Nuevo León, he moved to San Isidro for a better education—his teacher says his achievement shows that hard work pays off.  KRGV

  • Joe G. Rivera, a longtime Cameron County clerk who served for 38 years, died on April 2 at age 85—he is remembered for his dedicated public service. Visitation will be held Friday from 3-9 p.m.—funeral services will take place Saturday at noon at St. Luke’s followed by a procession and burial at Rose Lawn Cemetery.  MyRGV
  • Immigration attorneys debunk viral social media claims that green card holders will face a new entry ban starting April 25+ they said there is no executive order in place+ and urged residents to rely on legal professionals for accurate guidance.  FOX RGV
