  • Several county agencies gathered Monday at Market Square in Brownsville to honor National Crime Victim’s Rights Week and support victims with resources from groups like Friendship of Women.   • The Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley is asking for help after USDA cuts left it without staples like beans, rice, macaroni and cheese + companies such as Whataburger and H-E-B have offered some support while more local aid is needed.  KURV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Today, Brownsville firefighters responded to a smoke incident at the Tesla dealership after discovering a smoldering electric vehicle battery inside the service center—removing it safely with no injuries. Officials are investigating whether recent flooding may have compromised the battery while no fire damage was reported.  FOX RGV

  • Brownsville city officials announced Saturday that Barnes and Noble will open a new store at Sunrise Mall—taking the space once used by The Wave. The new location will be the third Barnes and Noble in the Lower Valley and will give residents a closer option to purchase books.  MyRGV

  • Fifty-one year old Mauro Esteban Garza Torres was taken into custody Friday without bond after a federal court in McAllen heard charges that his company GMT Machinery created false invoices to lower tariffs and export taxes — a probe that includes wire fraud allegations and property seizures.  KURV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • In the Port of Brownsville business park, Westa Inc. is finalizing plans for a $20 million building that will house a flour mill and sunflower seed plant for 120 workers—using barge deliveries to improve its supply chain. Ternium will invest $200 million to build a 180-acre marine terminal and electric steel plant that will boost the port’s metal throughput to over 9 million tons a year—helping the area meet USMCA standards.  Port of Brownsville

  • Brownsville residents are invited to join Mayor John Cowen Jr. for Coffee with the Mayor on April 16 at 6:30 p.m.—the event will be held at Luby's in Sunrise Mall.  City of Brownsville
  • Motorists are advised to expect road closures for the I-2/I-69C Interchange Project from April 7 through April 13, with daytime closures from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on sections in Pharr and nightly closures from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. on segments in Pharr, San Juan and McAllen - intermittent ramp closures will occur during construction work.  ValleyCentral
