  • After last week's storm, many Rio Grande Valley residents left their cars on flooded roads, and repair shop manager Ricardo Vento urged drivers to get inspections to check for rust, watermarks, mold & electrical damage. He explained that spending an extra $200 or $300 can help keep families safe.  KRGV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • At 5:02 a.m. on April 5, Brownsville resident Edgar Alberto Martinez drove his black Ford Focus north on FM 1419 south of Alaska Road, veered left, skidded off the road, and crashed into a tree—he was pronounced dead at the scene as the Texas Department of Public Safety investigates the incident.  ValleyCentral

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The City of Brownsville announced that the world’s largest retail bookstore by Barnes and Noble will be built at Sunrise Mall on the site of the former Wave store+ construction and store opening dates have not been announced. Officials expect more details soon+ the project will support the city’s retail growth.  ValleyCentral

CRIME NEWS

  • San Benito police are asking residents for help identifying a suspect caught on camera loading a stolen package into the trunk of a white Toyota Camry and fleeing the scene—investigators believe he may be working with an accomplice and are reviewing footage for additional leads.  FOX RGV
  • 20-year-old Kyle Fernandez was arrested after he allegedly used a threatening note that said 'This is a robbery' and claimed to have a gun during a robbery at Los Pinos Hardware Store on Conway Avenue; deputies recovered stolen cash and found a hammer at about 1:45 p.m.  FOX RGV

  • Daniel Silva is leaving his role as president and CEO of the Rio Grande Valley Partnership after 20 years of promoting economic growth and will become executive director of the South Texas Vo-Tech Campus in Brownsville (under the Lindenwood Education System).  Rio Grande Guardian

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Progreso Red Ants soccer team forfeited its state semi-final match against Salado after UIL held an emergency meeting one hour before the game to review an eligibility issue. Progreso ISD accepted the decision, and Salado advanced to the 4A Division 1 State Final.  KRGV
