BUSINESS NEWS

  • Texas Southmost College partners with the Harlingen Chamber to offer a free Small Business Leadership and Operational Growth Training Series aimed at helping small business staff grow their skills. The program launches on April 22 at the Harlingen Chamber, with registration ending on April 17.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • SpaceX filed a confidential IPO draft with the SEC and plans to go public in June to gather regulator feedback. The company aims to raise up to 75-billion dollars (with a potential valuation of 1.75-trillion dollars) as part of its major public offering effort.  KURV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Debbie Whitis Korth, a McAllen Memorial High School graduate, played a key role in NASA’s Artemis II launch yesterday from Kennedy Space Center (Florida). She helped design the spacecraft and now serves as deputy manager for the Orion program.  KURV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Brownsville Public Utilities Board is working to identify and replace lead water lines in older homes as required by federal law. Unknown cases have dropped from 5% to 2% (about 15,000 residences) as the board continues its inspections.  MyRGV
  • Harlingen-based HOPE for Small Farm Sustainability plans to appeal after the USDA ended its $7.4M grant over DEI practices, leaving local advocates concerned that small farmers may lose key training and support.  MyRGV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Since Wednesday, Texas SNAP restrictions have barred using food stamps for sugary drinks and candy to help combat diabetes and obesity in the Rio Grande Valley, and Dr. Yahya Hussin from South Texas Health System says the limits aim to improve health choices for local residents + reduce long-term risks.  KRGV
  • Raymondville resident Guadalupe Moreno has managed her type 2 diabetes by choosing lifestyle changes (including steaming her food for healthier eating) after her mother's advice prompted a checkup. Local experts report rising diabetes and obesity rates in the area and free screenings are available in April.  KRGV
