COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On May 18, Brownsville will host the Crawfish Boil and Brews event at Linear Park — a festival where residents can enjoy crawfish, brews, and a festive atmosphere.  KRGV
  • Today, the Salvation Army is donating meals in Harlingen to help flood victims after torrential downpours. It will serve 600 meals at the Monroe Ave site and 450 at the Harlingen Arts & Heritage Museum from noon through Saturday — and a drive-thru meal giveaway in Pharr began on Wednesday at 6 p.m. and runs until Friday — to assist those with storm damage.  ValleyCentral

CRIME NEWS

  • A 38-year-old woman from Georgia, Mirna Luna, pleaded guilty to smuggling 17 firearms and 27 magazines hidden in a Nissan's gas tank while trying to enter Mexico from Brownsville on Dec. 15th, 2024 — she now faces up to 10 years in prison with sentencing set for July 8th and a possible $250,000 fine.  ValleyCentral

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Tuesday's meeting, community members and union representatives supported Brownsville ISD Superintendent Jesus H. Chavez, but the board removed the agenda item on his employment review—resulting in no change to his position. The board’s split votes have raised concerns as it must appoint a successor by August 15—meeting state law requirements.  MyRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On April 1, the Brownsville City Commission approved a $3.5 million contract to expand the city landfill+ it also authorized eminent domain for a major drainage improvement project.  City of Brownsville
  • Today, Cameron County will begin debris pickup in unincorporated areas that flooded during heavy rains on March 27th and 28th. Residents must separate storm debris into six categories and place items at the edge of their property for removal – county Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr. said the cleanup is part of ongoing recovery efforts.  Cameron County
