CRIME NEWS

  • A Santa Rosa resident, Jossue Omar Gonzalez, 46, was sentenced to 14 years in prison for possession with intent to distribute cocaine after authorities linked him to drug trafficking charges from a smuggling attempt at the Sarita checkpoint, and he had two prior federal convictions.  ValleyCentral

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On March 18th, Hidalgo County approved a new economic program to boost tech business and the Rio Plex brand. County Judge Richard F. Cortez said the plan — led by Randy Perez — will use public funds to attract modern companies like the new Zoho facility and create better jobs.  MyRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Brownsville’s Office of the City Secretary in partnership with the Cameron County District Clerk’s Office — and the Cameron County Elections Department — will host a Passport, Birth Certificate, and Voter Registration Fair on March 29.  City of Brownsville
  • The Brownsville City Commission approved a motion to buy new equipment for the police department including 22 body cameras, one AXON Fusus Interface, and four Fleet 3 cameras—Commissioner Roy De Los Santos said the upgrades will help officers work effectively and be more transparent in service.  ValleyCentral
  • In San Benito, city commissioners are reviewing a plan to buy water rights today as the drought forces the irrigation district to approach critically low supplies—Mayor Rick Guerra said the move is needed to ensure future water access.  MyRGV
  • On March 18, 2025, the Brownsville City Commission met to discuss public improvement governance — environmental concerns and community safety initiatives — in preparation for future city changes.  City of Brownsville
  • The Texas Department of Transportation will hold two public meetings to discuss widening SH-4 from the outskirts of Brownsville to the SpaceX facility at Boca Chica Beach, improving shoulders, and adding a hike+bike path. A virtual meeting is scheduled for March 26 and an in-person meeting will take place today at Lucio Middle School.  KURV

  • The Department of Health, Wellness, and Animal Services will launch the 2025 Rabies Clinic to offer affordable pet vaccinations in Brownsville (in partnership with Boca Chica Animal Hospital, Companion Hospital, Brownsville Veterinary Hospital, and BISD).
