CRIME NEWS

  • Edinburg police arrested 23-year-old Jorge Hugo Contreras on March 15 after a street racing crash caused 22-year-old Faith Gonzalez to be ejected from a Mustang; his bond was set at $50,000—his cousin Juan Carlos Contreras had been booked for DUI and assault.  MyRGV
  • An officer-involved shooting near San Benito happened Tuesday at around 1:30 a.m.—the Texas Rangers said the suspect is being treated at a local hospital and a deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave.  KRGV
  • Texas Department of Public Safety arrested Michael Anthony Montoya—a confirmed Valluco gang member who led officers on a chase and crashed at Crockett Avenue and State Highway 48 in Brownsville while found with about 199 pounds of marijuana valued at $159,792—and he is now held in Cameron County Jail.  KRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Venezuelan asylum seeker was deported to El Salvador after being detained in North Carolina—his scheduled hearing was canceled under the rarely used 1798 Alien Enemies Act, which raised due process concerns. His mother now demands answers from U.S. and Salvadoran officials—she calls for his safe return as diplomatic tensions persist.  FOX RGV
  • Members of La Union del Pueblo Entero protested Hidalgo County’s request for $90,000 from Operation Lone Star funds Tuesday—arguing that the money should be invested in infrastructure. County commissioners approved the request after discussing its use to support local law enforcement efforts to slow human and drug smuggling.  KRGV
  • Small businesses along Old Highway 77 in Brownsville have seen fewer customers and lower profits since construction began last October, with one taquería reporting a loss of about 60% in sales. City Engineer Carlos Lastra said the city is installing sewer, water and storm lines—along with road improvements—with work scheduled for completion in December 2026.  KRGV
