CULTURE NEWS

  • Louie’s Backyard on South Padre Island, celebrating 50 years of Spring Break, will host Texas Week events with headliner Dee Jay Silver and a Neon Honky Tonk Party featuring DJ Slim McGraw — nightly displays include Rockstar Karaoke and the PADRAGE Pyro Show.  MyRGV
  • Camp RIO is hosting the grand opening of the Historic Lula Sams Girl Scout Museum today at 6 p.m. at its pavilion (280 Fish Hatchery Rd.) as the restored 1950s cabin displays artifacts and offers free refreshments, a special presentation, and arts and crafts for guests of all ages.  KRGV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • America First Refining announced a new oil refinery will be built at the Port of Brownsville on 240 acres with six liquid cargo docks and 13 general cargo docks (and direct rail connections). The deal includes a 20-year agreement to purchase and process over a billion barrels of shale oil.  KURV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brownsville Navigation District sponsored the BISD Racing Team — a recognized all-female group — to support STEM education and workforce development; the team, which finished third at Nationals in May 2025, now trains for upcoming GreenpowerUSA challenges.  Port of Brownsville

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is taking public comments on SpaceX's proposal to swap nearly 700 acres of its land for more than 700 acres at the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge (comments are accepted until March 31).  KURV
  • Island Metro Transit added three new wheelchair-accessible buses that began running routes from Laguna Heights and the island last week + the free service, largely funded by the FTA, helps nearly 500,000 riders get to work and shop.  KRGV
  • Cameron County officials have imposed a burn ban on leaves, brush, grass, and other debris for 90 days—an immediate step to lower fire risks—and violators may face a Class C misdemeanor with fines up to $500.  KURV
  • Local official Rolando Vela of Cameron County Drainage District No. 5 secured a $361,720 grant from the Texas Water Development Board to certify levees and update flood maps (covering Harlingen, Combes, Palm Valley and Primera) so property owners can better assess flood insurance needs. The district will work with local governments to complete the required local match.  Rio Grande Guardian
