ECONOMY NEWS

  • Judith Arrieta Mungia, the Mexican Consul, discussed international trade in a recent interview with the Rio Grande Guardian and stressed the T-MEC’s role in linking billions in commerce across North America — noting that Mexico is part of the solution in a review that bolstered economic ties among the countries.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • Texas is testing small modular nuclear reactors for its growing energy needs as officials hope the project spurs job and business investment. Governor Greg Abbott announced the creation of the Texas Advanced Nuclear Reactor Working Group after research estimated the grid's demand could nearly triple by 2050.  KURV
  • Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño said a project is near finalizing to build a $3.2 billion shipyard—potentially creating 10,000 jobs—at the Port of Brownsville, with a public hearing on tax abatements for Saronic Technologies set for March 24.  Rio Grande Guardian

  • Almost 240 Oliveira Middle School students have been practicing a ranchera tune and will march two miles in the Charro Days Fiesta Illuminated Parade on Friday, Feb. 27. Eighth grader Violeta Alvarez — a first-time conductor — will lead alongside fellow student Aurelio Rodriguez.  KRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport partnered with GoodMaps on Tuesday, Feb. 17 to use an indoor navigation app that uses computer vision + AI to help travelers needing accessibility navigate the terminal, especially those who are visually impaired.  MyRGV
  • Drivers in Brownsville say a 1.3-mile repaving project on I-69E is damaging cars with cracked windshields and chipped paint. TxDOT says the work is a safety measure + drivers can file complaints online as lane closures run nightly from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.  KRGV
  • Residents at Long Island Village met with Laguna Madre Water District officials during a Wednesday town hall to discuss muddy roads linked to a $20 million water and wastewater project. Officials said they will schedule another meeting when updates on repairs are available as residents seek better communication.  KRGV
