CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Students at Harmony Science Academy in Brownsville are preparing to perform a cumbia Norteño dance for Sombrero Festival on Thursday, Feb. 26. They practice twice a week after school and will perform to a mix by Los Trigillos (a local performer) while wearing white, green, and red outfits inspired by the festival. KRGV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Brownsville ISD trustees approved a $1 million project to upgrade cracked tennis courts at Hanna Early College High School; the renovations include new courts, bleachers, nets, and other updates and will finish within the next four months. The improvements will enhance playing conditions for student athletes and local tournaments. KRGV
- ➤ Dr. Jesus Chavez, the Brownsville ISD superintendent, will retire in June after finishing his contract to spend more time with his family. The school board will soon begin the search for a new leader. KRGV
- ➤ VAMOS is celebrating 30 years of service with a golf tournament on Saturday, March 7 at Champion Lakes Golf Course in McAllen to raise $1 million for renewable scholarships awarding up to $20,000 over four years. Local first-generation students from Hidalgo, Cameron and Starr counties will benefit from the funds. Rio Grande Guardian
- ➤ Last year, over 42,000 students applied for the TEFA school voucher program, which offers up to $10,000 per student + extra funds for eligible cases. More than 60 private schools in the Valley are set to join the program for the upcoming 2026-2027 school year. MyRGV
