EDUCATION NEWS

  • UTRGV opened its Spring semester with a record first day enrollment of 32,429 students, including 4,569 graduate students. The record marks a 2.8% increase from last spring as university President Guy Bailey said the growth reflects strong local support — a trend expected to add between 500 and 1,000 students each year.  MyRGV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Sea Turtle Inc. released nearly 300 cold-stunned sea turtles back into the Gulf on Thursday at South Padre Island (where hundreds gathered to watch) after a rescue operation warmed the waters. Volunteers and locals celebrated the event and look forward to more wildlife recovery efforts.  KRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hidalgo County received a $15M grant from the Texas Water Development Board + began planning a $75M water treatment project near Edinburg that will provide 5M gallons daily, + helping supply about 85,000 people.  KURV
  • SpaceX is seeking a state tax refund under its Enterprise Zone Program to support two new projects at Starbase that are expected to add 500 jobs each & expand its 700,000-sqft GigaBay facility. Local officials say the incentive aims to boost job creation in our region.  MyRGV
