- ➤ Rio Hondo police responded to seven illegal trash fires in one month (latest on Jan. 3) and warned residents that backyard burning without a permit can spread dangerous embers in dry, windy conditions. KRGV

- ➤ Texas Southmost College marks 100 years with a free conjunto festival today to kick off a year-long centennial celebration. The festival starts at 11 a.m. with a student band competition (alumni are invited) and live performances at 3 p.m. on the South Lawn. KRGV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ San Benito city leaders have launched a $1.4 million project to repair the iconic Freddy Fender water tower by cleaning, repairing, and recoating it to preserve its historic look. Residents may face temporary low water pressure until the work is complete (expected March). KRGV
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ DHR Health Transplant Institute in Edinburg performed 101 kidney transplants in 2025, the highest annual total since its opening in 2017. The milestone shows patients can receive advanced care close to home instead of traveling to San Antonio or Houston. Rio Grande Guardian
