  • Mario Reyna, executive director of RioPlex, said the group is strengthening ties to become North America’s premier binational economic region. RioPlex will boost investment and build partnerships to create better jobs and drive long term growth in areas from Roma to Brownsville — across Tamaulipas.  Rio Grande Guardian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Brownsville Public Utilities Board customers will face a 5% water rate increase today, with residential users of 5,000 gallons seeing about a $3 rise in their bills + officials say the higher rates will boost water system upkeep and growth.  KURV

  • Two Rio Grande Valley families welcomed newborns on Jan. 1 in Edinburg — Azeneth Murillo was born at 3:27 a.m. at DHR Health Women’s Hospital as the Valley’s first baby of 2026, and Samuel Gonzalez arrived later at South Texas Health System.  MyRGV
  • South Texas Health System doctors warn residents about the dangers of unregulated fireworks, which have recently caused more face and hand injuries. Dr. James Gratton advises against lighting fireworks near dry grass or houses and urges parents to supervise children.  KRGV
